Article summary

MFA server upgrades are a quick and simple process. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding the process:

  • The process generally takes 30 minutes or less
  • There is minimum server downtime of 5 minutes or less while running the installer for the new version
  • Client cached credentials allow for reduced end user downtime
  • PingMe/OTP logins will not work during the actual installation of the new MFA server software
  • Current client sessions are not kicked off for any reason
  • Servers are backwards compatible, allowing you to upgrade MFA clients at your own pace (if you experience issues with an older client version with the new server, we recommend upgrading the client first, to see if it fixes the problem)

Please be sure your MFA server is compatible

MFA Server Requirements

What you can do to help make the upgrade process faster

  • Have backups of the following:
    MFA Server Key
    ৹ SQL MFA database
    ৹ Installation folder (C:\Program Files\Identity Automation)
৹ Snapshots of virtual servers are also acceptable

  • Be sure the IIS settings are all installed and correct per our Installing IIS page

Upgrading Server OS

"In-place" upgrades of the overall server operating system have been successful in the past with no issues. If you decide to do one, please be sure to take backups of the listed items above.

It's extremely important to know to restore your MFA Server Key backup when the upgrade is complete. Please see the page linked for more information and instructions.
